Into AI New World
Is artificial intelligence a friend or foe?
Advancing tech was cool and all until it started generating art - that’s when things got personal, especially for designers. But is AI really coming for our jobs? Well, we can’t confirm that for the near future, but we can explore how AI is transforming the creative industry.
If AI is responsible for the creative output, that leaves creative input in our human hands. Managing and curating this creative input is known as:
Prompt Engineering
The skill of crafting the most succinctly tailored brief for the AI “creator.”
How much longer will it be until this skill is essential for all designers? AI means optimisation and speed, so creative outputs are produced faster and at lower prices. The designer would then simply check, approve/reject, and if necessary, make manual adjustments. Would cheaper labour mean a cheapened respect for the design skill? Speed, however, may be used more for the early stages of designing. Using AI can help to “capture the vision of a project quickly,” taking over the sketching and ideation stages. AI-generated imagery depends on specific information, so remaining skilled and knowledgeable will forever be the place of the designer.
“Designers will bring the necessary empathetic context for innovation."
