Biomimicry

Biomimicry is a practice that learns from and mimics the strategies found in nature to solve human design challenges - and find hope.

Sometimes when we run out of ideas, the greatest source of solutions can come from nature. When we look into the mechanisms of biology, we can discover that concepts can translate seamlessly into the greater human world.

1. Lotus flowers designed wall cleaning

The nano structure of lotus petals are so effectively waterproof that researchers have applied the same design structure to coats and sealants. It offers self-cleaning properties too where dirt particles roll off the surface - perfect for wall paint!

2. Sharks designed swimwear

Under the microscope, scientists have observed that a shark’s skin has overlapping scales called ‘denticles.’ Their biology enables them to be fast predatorial swimmers. When applied to swim suits, they improve performance to an unbeatable record that they are now banned!

3. Prairie dogs designed ventilation systems

Brazilian hotel VOTU’s ventilation system took inspiration from the prairie dog’s home. Their underground burrows maintain cool temperatures in extreme climates, which helps humans to discover a cooling system that relies less on air conditioning.

“The people who design our world have never taken a biology class, so they’re novices on how the world works."
